Concerned Farmers Association members have vowed to stage a huge protest against the Minority party in Parliament if the appointment of the Food and Agriculture Minister-designate is refused.
Mr Owusu Afriyie Akoto is one of three candidates rejected by members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Association claims that its members from all 16 regions are preparing to take to the streets in protest of the NDC’s “shocking and unfortunate decision.”
The party accused the NDC of sacrificing the national interest for their individual and parochial interests in a statement released and signed by its National President, Nana Opambour Boateng.
“We are issuing a stern warning to the NDC and its representatives in Parliament to exercise restraint in their actions. They can do politics with everything but our agricultural sector, which we will vigorously oppose,” it said.
They say that the sector is on the rebound as a result of the Minister’s major interventions, and that any effort to undermine him would be met with hostility.
“We regard the NDC’s decision as highly political and petty; as far as we are concerned, the Minister designate behaved in the best interests of ordinary Ghanaian farmers, and we are puzzled as to why the Minority has reached this bizarre conclusion,” it said.
As a result, members of the Organization are urging the NDC to reconsider their decision or face their wrath.
They claimed that if the Minority in Parliament genuinely cares about the interests of farmers in this country, they should reconsider their decision.
“We know the NDC has a large number of constituents who are farmers, especially in the north of the country; they should not forget that if this Minister is rejected, they stand to lose a lot,” the Association argued.
They also urged well-intentioned Ghanaians to join them in condemning the NDC for sacrificing competence on the altar of personal gain and vendetta.
