A team of volunteering community service organizations from the University of Cape Coast and the Cape Coast metropolis, on Wednesday, embarked on an Independence Day clean-up and sensitization exercise programme in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
The exercise, which started from Aboom ended at the GRA offices.
The team comprising 12 organizations was divided into two broader categories, some for clean-up and some for educating the community members on how to handle and dispose of waste generated.
In an interview with ATL FM NEWS, the convener and coordinator of the 12 groups for the Independence Day Clean-up, Emmanuel Kouffie said the clean-up is a step towards contributing their efforts to tackling the ever-growing issue of plastic pollution in the metropolis.
“Our goal is that we want to see reduced plastic waste in our environment and also to get people informed about the effects of plastic waste on humans and other living things.”
Sharing some experience so far, the founder of Community Citizen Service, David Aseidu Korankye Sunday said their mission emphasizes environmental soundness, and their current experiences show positive progress in achieving that goal.
He mentioned that they effectively address issues like choked gutters, focusing on finding sustainable solutions.
On his part, Dennis Baffour-Awuah, founder of Love for Science indicated that the clean-up exercise is to raise the sense of responsibility among the community members about the need to dispose of waste properly.
He suggested that the district assembly support the exercise through more sensitization and provide adequate dustbins to the metropolis.
Mr. Baffour-Awuah mentioned further that they are exploring the possibility of introducing a recycling program to the communities.
The programme aims to incentivize individuals to bring plastic waste by offering a small monetary reward.
He emphasized that this initiative is essential as plastic waste poses environmental risks due to its non-biodegradable nature adding that “the programme has seen success in its initial stages.”
