The Accra Circuit Court sentenced a community police officer of the Airport Police Station to 15 years in prison for defiling a 10-year-old child.
After a full trial, Bright Dzebu, who had pled not guilty to the allegation of defilement, was found guilty by the court presided over by Christiana Cann.
The court ruled that the prosecution demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that Dzebu invited the girl into his room and had unprotected intercourse with her.
Following that, he told the girl not to tell anybody about the conduct.
Menace to society
Mrs Cann, in delivering her verdict, characterised Dzebu as a danger and a threat to society who needed to be imprisoned immediately.
According to her, it was critical to impose a harsher sentence on the offender in order to serve as a deterrence to those who had made a point of defiling kids, adding that it was the only way the country could safeguard young girls and women from the prying eyes of men like Dzebu.
Dzebu’s behavior was described as “animalistic,” and as such, he had to be dealt with harshly.
“He is a dangerous homosapien who needs to be put away immediately. He did not show mercy to the little child and therefore he does not deserve mercy,” the presiding judge added.
Facts
The Prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Agnes Boafo, recited the facts of the case, which stated that the victim and her aunt resided in the same neighborhood as Dzebu. According to her, the kid’s aunt went to a funeral in October of last year, leaving the girl behind.
“Dzebu took advantage of her absence and lured the victim into his room and forcibly had unprotected sexual intercourse with her”, she added.
DSP Boafo stated that Dzebu urged the child not to tell anybody, including her aunt, what had transpired.
“However, during the early days of December, the victim fell sick and complained of severe abdominal pains and when quizzed by the complainant, narrated her ordeal to her”, DSP Boafo said.
