The Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has updated the public on four major cases currently under investigation.
The cases include the murder of an immigration officer, a major breakthrough in car robbery cases, the arrest of suspects in a taxi robbery, and ongoing work on transnational vehicle theft in collaboration with Interpol.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, August 4, COP Donkor revealed that the key suspect, who was initially facing a charge of kidnapping, has now been formally charged with murder following intensive investigations.
In what the police describe as a “gruesome killing,” Assistant Inspector Stephen King Amoah of the Ghana Immigration Service was murdered after being lured from his home in Accra under suspicious circumstances.
The officer, who worked at the Sports Directorate of the GIS headquarters, went missing on July 3, 2025, after reportedly meeting a man identified as Bright Aweh to settle a financial matter.
According to CID Director, “Initial investigations led to the arrest of Bright Aweh, also known as ‘Highest Bright’, who admitted meeting the deceased and handing over GH₵500,000 to him. However, he failed to explain the source of the funds and gave conflicting statements, raising suspicions.”
A severely burnt body, later identified as Inspector Amoah, was found on July 9 at a dumping site near a gutter at GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, Accra. Subsequent forensic investigations revealed traces of blood, attempted cleanups, and suspicious items including a blood-stained pestle and vehicle at Aweh’s residence.
The CID has since upgraded the charge from kidnapping to murder. Aweh remains on remand and is scheduled to reappear in court on August 8.
In another major breakthrough, police have arrested Abubakari Sadiq, a convicted fugitive behind multiple car robberies across the country.
Sadiq, who previously escaped custody in Burkina Faso, used the cover of missionary work to defraud car rental companies. Victims were often tied up and abandoned in remote areas while their vehicles were stolen.
“Sadiq was arrested on July 20, 2025, in a joint operation between the CID Anti-Robbery Unit and National Security operatives. He is currently in custody and assisting with investigations,” the CID revealed.
He had previously been sentenced in absentia to 25 years in prison by the Cape Coast High Court for a 2021 robbery.
Police have also arrested Vincent Bentoglo, a repeat offender linked to a robbery incident on January 1, 2025, involving a taxi driver. The driver was attacked and robbed of GH₵13,000 in mobile money and personal belongings.
Bentoglo was arrested in Madina on July 10, and a search revealed the victim’s mobile phone and other stolen items. Investigations into the whereabouts of his accomplices are ongoing.
The CID also announced efforts in collaboration with Interpol and the Ghana Revenue Authority to clamp down on stolen vehicles smuggled into Ghana.
The partnership aims to trace and repatriate vehicles stolen from other countries and disrupt international crime syndicates involved in money laundering, identity theft, and visa fraud.
“We are working closely with global partners to strengthen intelligence sharing and investigative cooperation,” COP Lydia Donkor said.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to delivering justice and called on the public to volunteer information that could assist in ongoing investigations.
“We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned. These cases demonstrate our resolve to ensure that criminals, regardless of how far they try to run, are brought to book,” the CID concluded.
