The Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo has dismissed claims that the Church is deliberately putting pressure on government to lift the ban on social gatherings.
Last week, the Christian Council of Ghana issued a release detailing measures the Church intends to employ should the ban be lifted.
The release received wide spread criticism from the public with many questioning why the church could be insensitive towards the possible dangers social gatherings could bring to members in the wake of the upsurge in confirmed cases.
Responding to these criticisms, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Boafo indicated that the Church, on the contrary, was in support of government’s safety initiatives. However, he said, the release was just a mitigation plan the church had drawn should the ban be lifted and not to coerce government to lift the ban at all cost.

“It is not true the Church is forcing government to lift the ban on social gatherings. What we did was a mitigation plan we had drawn after meeting with the president on the roadmap as far as church service is concerned should the ban be lifted”, he said.
He added that the church “fully supports the government on the plans it has initiated” and will not at any point oppose any decisions.
“If there should be any institution that should protect its members, it should be from the church”, Most Rev. Dr. Boafo said.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has described as welcoming the mitigation plan drawn by the church.

According to him, the President will give it the needed attention after careful deliberation with all stakeholders involved.
In his view what is important now is for the citizenry to adhere to all the safety protocols outlined by the World Health Organisation and the Ghana Health Service.
