Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has called on the warring factions in Bawku to avoid politicizing the ongoing crisis and urged them to halt any blame-shifting as tensions continue to rise.
His plea follows the recent surge in violence that has tragically claimed 16 lives, with the latest conflict erupted on October 24, sparked by the return of Seidu Abagre to Bawku after his controversial enskinment as Bawku Naba in February 2023, despite his lack of legal recognition for the title.
At a press briefing, Mr. Asamoah Boateng appealed for calm and emphasized the government’s role in promoting peace and protecting lives stating that “The government is guided by its responsibility to protect lives and property, and above all to enforce law and order, to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.”
He noted that interpretations by various factions had sometimes “inflamed passions” and fueled the crisis, adding, “I sense a level of mistrust that has crept in, but I want to assure all sides that the government, especially my ministry, will act with impartiality and fairness to build and maintain peace.”
He emphasized that all parties should refrain from politicizing the conflict, committing to work with leaders across the political spectrum, indicating that “No one should play politics with this sensitive matter, I will continue to engage with my colleagues and all political leaders to resolve the current problems and work toward lasting peace in the area.”
Mr. Asamoah Boateng also addressed Bawku’s traditional leaders, urging them to refrain from actions that could heighten tensions.
“The role of key personalities in resolving this is crucial. The government has requested Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to mediate and bring about an amicable solution. He has been actively engaging with both sides, and we are seeing progress,” he explained.
“In this conflict, it’s important to consult widely, and I assure you that these discussions reach deeply into traditional channels to ensure a broad understanding. We are committed to ongoing dialogue for peace, and I thank the traditional authorities for their cooperation.”
With tensions high, Mr. Asamoah Boateng underscored the government’s dedication to a peaceful resolution and encouraged all sides to trust in the government’s impartiality and commitment to stability in Bawku.
