Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) claim they are dedicated to combating illegal mining in the country.
Within three days of the second step of its “Operation Halt,” the GAF claims to have made substantial strides in halting illegal mining along the River Pra.
Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, Chief of Defence Staff, shared happiness with field personnel during a visit.
“I came to visit the troops in the field and give a special message of ‘mission accomplishment’ for the efforts they have made so far in combating the menace of illegal mining, especially near bodies of water. I am very impressed by what they were able to do in three days. They have fully cleared the River Pra from the estuary to Twifo Praso.”
“The Ghana Armed Forces are always prepared to protect the country’s territorial integrity,” he said.
President Nana Akufo-Addo sent approximately 200 military troops last week to root out illegal miners wreaking havoc on the country’s water bodies.
The Information Ministry announced the service on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, on the River Pra in the Central and Western Regions.
The government recently reaffirmed its pledge to combat illegal mining during a National Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining, during which stakeholders urged the government to take action to ensure that the country’s mining laws are strictly enforced.
The government says it is redoubling its efforts to eradicate the threat in the country.
