The National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO in Central Region has recorded three deaths and loss of some properties following recent heavy downpours in the region.
The fatalities, according to the Central Regional Director for NADMO, Mr. Joe Donkor, were recorded in the Kasoa and Gomoa East areas.
He explained that at Kosoa “a victim got drowned in a well but the other was sleeping in a kiosk and because he was drunk; he overslept and the flood carried the kiosk with the body away.”
At Gomoa East, Mr. Donko indicated that “the victim got drowned while trying to cross an overflowing river with his friends”
He also mentioned that some districts have had their properties destroyed due to the rains and advised the masses not to move during the heavy rains. “We should not force ourselves too much, it is better to wait than to go and die or have your car destroyed because you are in a hurry to move”
Mr. Joe Donkor who spoke in an interview with ATL FM News on Wednesday expressed the need for residents to be proactive to safeguard lives and properties.

He said parents should prepare and provide the necessary materials for their final year wards, who are to resume school on the 15th of June, 2020. “Items such as rain coats, umbrellas and sweaters are needful for the students to protect themselves from the weather.” He said
He added that “all the companies that have put bill boards along the road should check it because some are weak; they can remove it or fix it so that the wind will not blow it down to hit a passing car or a person.”
Mr. Joe Donkor however expressed disappointment at residents’ response to NADMO’s directives towards managing casualties and loss of properties during the raining season. He said it is high time residents owned up and ensured the needful is done.
He has therefore advised residents who live in flood prone areas to construct their own gutters to ensure proper drainage in the area.
Mr. Joe Donkor noted it is important for residents to protect themselves so that the disaster this year will be minimized “if we even get no disaster in central region this year, I will be very happy”.
