Violence against women is a global issue that is condemned by respective societies and many international bodies like the United Nations.
It is because of this that the world joins hands on November 25 annually to mark the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Activities that are earmarked for the celebration include the launch of the 16-days of activism which is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
The 16-days of activism will end on December 10, the day set aside for the celebration of Human Rights.
Ahead of these days of activism, the Centre for Gender, Research, Advocacy, and Documentation has held a Gender-Based Violence Reporting and Handling Methodology Workshop to commemorate this year’s edition of the days of activism.
The Director of the Centre, Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro said the workshop was aimed at bringing together duty bearers in the Central Region who are connected to the handling of Sexual and Gender-based violence (SGBV) cases to brainstorm on how they can better handle those cases.
“So, around this time the global community celebrates differently or does different programs to draw attention to the issue of gender-based violence and how to control it.” She added.
She noted that the workshop is part of the center’s mandatory activities of advocating and reaching out to people on gender issues.
Speaking in an interview with ATL FM NEWS, the Central Regional Director for the Department of Gender, Mrs. Richlove Amamoo underscored the relevance of the workshop in mitigating Sexual and Gender-Based violence in the Central Region.
To her, the workshop is in the right direction as issues of sexual and gender-based violence in the region is disturbing.
“And I think it is time we all come together to combat the situation. I will congratulate CEGRAD for what they have done today. And I think collaboration is the best thing to do. We need to bring everybody on board.” She said.
She, therefore, commended CEGRAD for their collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the workshop.
Attending the workshop were stakeholders in central region drawn from the education sector, counselors, security services; such as DOVVSU, police, among others.
Others include people from the health sector, social welfare, CHRAJ, and different duty bearers who are connected in one way or the other when it comes to sexual, gender-based violence cases handling in the central region.
