The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has voiced concern over the growing tensions in Parliament following the Speaker’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant and the subsequent ruling by the Supreme Court.
In a press release, CDD-Ghana called on all stakeholders to maintain peace as the country approaches the 2024 general elections.
This appeal is based on the Centre’s monitoring of developments since October 15, 2024, following the invocation of Article 97 (1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, who questioned the status of the four seats.
“The Centre strongly urges all Members of Parliament, political parties, the Executive, and the media to exercise maximum restraint, act responsibly, and respect the constitutional principles and processes that underpin Ghana’s democracy. It is essential to prioritize peace and stability and avoid a repeat of the regrettable incidents witnessed during the Speaker’s election on January 7, 2021,” the statement urged.
Recognizing the diversity of opinions in public and legal discourse surrounding the Speaker’s actions and the Supreme Court’s ruling, CDD-Ghana acknowledged the complexity of the issue.
“This situation presents a unique challenge to Ghana’s constitutional practice, demanding careful and sensitive management to prevent political and constitutional crises as we approach the 2024 elections,” the Centre noted.
CDD-Ghana further advised Parliament to adhere to the Supreme Court’s ruling despite differing opinions.
“To de-escalate the current tensions and uphold the rule of law, we encourage the Speaker and Parliament to fully comply with the Supreme Court’s directives. The timely submission of the necessary legal documents will facilitate a swift resolution of the matter. Should Parliament find it necessary, they retain the option to seek a review of the Court’s decision.”
The statement concluded by urging Ghanaians to remain calm and respect the judicial process.
“In the spirit of national unity, we call on all Ghanaians to stay calm, respect the legal process, and continue to promote peace as we work together to safeguard the country’s democracy.”
