Speaking in an interview with ATLFMNEWS, she indicated that reading is an important skill for the academic success of school children and therefore much attention should be given to students who are struggling with it.
“When we talk about basic skills, reading is paramount. The child’s ability to read would mean that throughout the child’s academic endeavour, he or she would be able to excel.”
“With the mindset of having struggling learners in our classrooms we need to equip the teachers to be able to help those who are struggling to read,” she noted.
She also called on schools to effectively use Ghana’s inclusive education policy which was introduced in 2013 which according to her, gives enough guidelines in dealing with situations that involves children with special educational need.
According to her, if teachers are having problems with the implementation of the inclusive education policy, they should seek help from institutions that can help provide educational interventions for children who are having challenges in the classroom as well as training workshops on how to handle children with SEN.
The training workshop which was on the theme “Effective teaching strategies for handling children with reading and handwriting difficulties in an inclusive setting”.
