The Ghana National Catholic Laity Council (NCLC) has thrown its weight behind the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that the practice threatens Ghana’s environment, human life, and national security.
In a statement signed by Chairman Sir John Kofi Tandoh, KSG, and issued on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the Council described galamsey as a national disaster with dire consequences.
“Considering the unspeakable deaths, pain, and destruction that galamsey has brought to this country, we must act now. To destroy the environment for selfish gain is to offend not only our neighbor but also God, the Creator and Owner of all things,” the statement said.
The NCLC highlighted the devastating impact of illegal mining on rivers such as the Pra, Birim, Ankobra, and Offin, which it said are now poisoned with mercury and cyanide.
It further noted the destruction of farmlands, the displacement of families, and the health risks posed to communities, including kidney failure, cancers, and strange skin diseases.
“This is not simply a fight for rivers and forests. It is a fight for the soul of Ghana. Let us not allow greed and recklessness to rob future generations of their heritage,” the Council stressed.
The statement urged government, traditional leaders, and citizens to join the Bishops in taking bold steps to eradicate the menace and preserve Ghana’s natural heritage for future generations.
