A fatal road crash that occurred near the University of Cape Coast, West Gate, on the Takoradi-Accra Highway on Thursday June 19, 2025, has claimed the life of a 19-year old and left several others injured.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:48pm when a Donfeng tipper truck with registration number GN 5710-19 loaded with sand and driven by 29-year-old Bright Essel, was en route from Bronyimba to DVLA junction.
According to Police reports, the truck driver veered off his lane and ran over the kerb before crashing into a Nissan Sentra saloon car with registration number CR 1756-12 driven by Kofi Kum aged 57, Honda CRV 4×4 with registration number CR 319-20 driven by Anita Ansah aged 37 and an Apsonic motor tricycle ridden by George Ayensu Peters aged 26, who were observing traffic from the nearside section of the road to join the highway.
The drivers, together with the tricycle rider and three other victims identified as Charles Ayensu Peters, 47, Prince Anamag Baidoo, 27, and Wilfred Awusi Ninson, 19-year suffered various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the University of Cape Coast Hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, 19 -year old Wilfred Awusi Ninson was pronounced dead shortly after arrival by the medical officer on duty. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
UCC Hospital Report
ATL FM’S Aba Aikins visited the UCC Hospital, where the Director of University Health Services, Dr. James Prah provided an update.
Dr. Prah confirmed that 5 victims were rushed to the facility’s emergency unit after the crash.
“I was informed of a terrible accident and immediately rushed to the emergency unit. When I arrived, I saw five victims but unfortunately, one of them was brought in dead,” Dr. Prah disclosed.
He revealed that the remaining four had varying injuries ranging from deep cuts to bleeding from different parts of their bodies.

According to Dr. Prah, the severity of their conditions differed, with some requiring urgent surgical attention.
“Yesterday, we managed to stabilize them all” adding that “on Thursday Morning, two of the injured victims were declared fit and have been discharged while the two remain on admission for continued treatment and monitoring.”
Meanwhile, tipper truck driver, Bright Essel, has been detained by police to assist with further investigations.
Victim’s Report
26-year old George Ayensu Peters, who was riding an Apsonic motor tricycle, was one of the two remaining victims on admission at the UCC Hospital at the time of the visit.
Narrating the horrifying moment, the accident occurred, he said, “we were waiting by the side of the road when suddenly the tipper truck veered off and came straight at us.”
“I was in the tricycle with my father, Charles Ayensu Peters, 47. We had gone to the UCC hospital to show to a doctor- an X-ray of my brother who was earlier involved in a motor accident here in Cape Coast and is currently on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching hospital.”
“Upon, returning to the hospital where my brother was, we unfortunately got involved in the accident.”
I was not using the tricycle for commercial purposes,” he added.
