Canning Says Cork Will Bounce Back from Setback
Joe Canning doesn’t believe Cork’s crushing defeat to Limerick will leave a lasting mark on their mindset. Speaking after Limerick’s dominant 3-26 to 1-16 win in the Munster Championship, Canning suggested that the result might actually do more to boost Limerick’s self-confidence than harm Cork’s. Despite the 16-point margin, he believes Cork won’t dwell on it for too long.
“I don’t think it will affect them too much,” the former Galway star said on The Sunday Game. “It just looked like Cork weren’t as sharp or aggressive as they’ve been in other matches. It didn’t seem like they were too stressed about the loss.” His view? The Rebels simply didn’t show up that day.

A Setback, Not a Breakdown
Liam Rushe, the former Dublin defender, echoed that sentiment. He thinks Cork will write this one off and move on quickly. “It’s easier to move past a game like this when you know you didn’t perform at all,” he said. “It’s not like it was a close fight where both teams gave everything. Cork just weren’t at the races. That can be frustrating, but it’s also easier to shake off. They’ll be eager to come out next time and show what they’re really made of.”
Both pundits agreed that the loss might even give Cork the fire they need for their next match. A blow like this can sting—but it can also motivate.
Limerick’s Fear Factor Is Back
As for Limerick, things are looking very different. Their place in the Munster final is practically sealed, and they can afford to rest players against Clare, who are already out.
Canning thinks Limerick have regained something they lost: their intimidation factor. “That fear of playing Limerick is back,” he said. “Teams will definitely be a bit nervous facing them now. It looks like they’re back to their best.”
So while Cork may have suffered a heavy blow, it’s far from a knockout. And Limerick? They’re roaring again.
