Marc Canham is officially stepping down from his position as Chief Football Officer of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). Canham joined the FAI back in June 2022, taking over from Ruud Dokter as Director of Football. One of the most significant things he introduced during his time was the “Football Pathways Plan,” launched in early 2024. The plan aimed to unify the football calendar across all levels in Ireland, with a major goal of having leagues across the country transition to a calendar year season by 2028. A Time of Progress and Challenges
While the Football Pathways Plan was a big highlight, Canham’s time in the role wasn’t without its bumps. The drawn-out search to replace Stephen Kenny as manager drew plenty of criticism, and there were also regrets about how the removal of Colin Healy as assistant coach of the women’s national team was handled. Canham openly acknowledged these issues. Canham Departs FAI Role.
FAI Acknowledges His Impact
The FAI released a statement confirming his departure, highlighting the key role Canham played during his nearly three-year stint. They credited him for helping to shape the direction of Irish football and for laying a strong foundation with the Football Pathways Plan, which aims to grow the game from the grassroots level all the way up to the professional and international stages. Canham will stay on for a little while to ensure a smooth transition. Meanwhile, the FAI says they’ll start looking for a new Chief Football Officer right away, with details on an interim setup to be shared soon.
Canham Shares His Reasons
Speaking about his decision, Canham said that after careful thought, he’s decided it’s time to return to England with his family and look for new opportunities both personal and professional. He said he’s truly enjoyed his time in Ireland and is proud of the work done to help Irish football grow. He expressed his gratitude to the FAI board, staff, and everyone involved in Irish football, and wished them all the best for the future.
Leaders Pay Tribute
FAI President Paul Cooke said they’re sorry to see Canham go but respect his choice. He praised Canham’s efforts, especially his leadership in rolling out the Football Pathways Plan, calling it a solid starting point for future success. CEO David Courell echoed those sentiments, saying Marc brought a clear vision to the table and helped shape a unified approach to the game in Ireland something the FAI is committed to continuing.
