On Friday, 9th April, 2021, Cambodia announced a sharp increase in coronavirus cases, with 576 new infections.
The regular number, published by the Ministry of Health, is by far the highest in Cambodia’s history, accounting for more cases than the world witnessed during the pandemic’s first year.
Both of the latest infections was associated with an epidemic dubbed the February 20 case, after the date on which it was discovered.
The initial cause of the outbreak has been identified as a group of Chinese nationals who fled from hotel quarantine prior to completing a required isolation time.
It now accounts for the lion’s share of the country’s 3,604 incidents and is suspected in 24 of the 24 Covid-related deaths.
The surge on Friday comes as a result of the discovery of new hotspots in the capital Phnom Penh. Among these are a bustling city market and a fabric factory.
Cambodian officials also implemented restrictions to stem the transmission of the disease, including an internal travel embargo, an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, and the closing of tourist attractions, including the country’s famed Angkor Wat temple.
