The Controller and Accountants General Office (CAG) is urging the public sector workers to avail themselves of the registration of the Ghana Card.
According to the Head of Public Relations at the Controller and Accountants General Office, Cephas Dosoo, the NIA has positioned itself to meet the demands and register all individuals.
Government workers risk losing their December 2021 salaries if they have no Ghana card.
They have thus been given about a month and a half to register for the Ghana Card or be denied their salaries.
The move is said to be part of the Government of Ghana’s efforts to deliver a speedy, secured, and verified payroll service to government employees and pensioners while reducing the risk of undeserving payments or claims.
Labour unions and public sector workers in the country have subsequently expressed their displeasure with the directive, describing it as harsh, and meant to deprive government workers their due for work done.
Reacting to this development in an interview monitored by ATLFMNEWS Thursday, Mr. Dosoo indicated the responsibility of protecting the public purse is on the neck of CAG and as such it is important for all persons to register.
“The issuance of the national identity card did not start from today and so it’s best that we all make an attempt to avail ourselves and attempt to register…the letter just came out this week and we have availed ourselves to see whether we could go through the process of registering for the cards and we already talking about the fact that the time is too short”
Mr. Dosoo noted that if there is the need to extend the deadline, amends will be made in that regard.
He stressed that “let’s avail ourselves and attempt to register. If the deadline given comes up we can then sit and review the system, review what the situations are, and if there is the need for us to make amends as far as the deadline is concerned we would…”
