The Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed dissatisfaction over what they describe as the persecution of its Members and Party supporters in the region by the ruling New Patriotic Party.
The NDC believe this forms part of the deliberate attempt to frustrate and intimidate its members in the ongoing voter transfer, the proxy and the related electioneering exercises supervised by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The NDC made this assertion in its press conference held on Sunday, June 9th, 2024 to brief the media and the general public on the just-ended limited voter registration exercise, the ongoing voter transfer, the proxy and security matters affecting the party within the region.
Addressing the press, the Party’s Central Regional Chairman, Professor Richard Kofi Asiedu assured that the NDC is monitoring happenings within the region carefully and is ready to resist any form of intimidation, suppression and attack on any of its members and supporters.
“The NPP government and the party are hereby notified that Central Region is monitoring the event very closely and will do anything legitimate to ensure justice for all members and the good people of Ghana, “he said.
The NDC Central Region Chairman called out certain constituencies including Efuttu, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, and Ewutu Senya West among others where he alleged that the NPP is engaged in unlawful practices in the ongoing voter transfer and the proxy application.
According to him, voters in Esikuma-Odoben-Brakwa “were lured and bused with financial inducement. They were promised business loans and sent to Accra for registration. We are following up on this issue to identify the exact beneficiary constituency in Accra.”
“In Abura Asebu Kwamankese the NPP is auditing the EC register for dead people to register as proxy vote. We want to encourage everyone whose family member has passed on to report to the exhibition centre when the opportunity arises to strike out the names of their deceased relatives.
“The Efuttu Constituency the majority leader and the MP bused 71 men clad in military uniform to transfer their votes. This has raised a lot of eyebrows in the constituency. We want the Ghana armed forces to investigate and come out with a response on these 71 men. …” he continued.
Prof. Asiedu also accused Ewutu Senya East Member of Parliament and the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson of threatening the NDC parliamentary Candidate, Philis Naa Koryoo Okunor with a gun on several occasions.
To him, Philis Naa Koryoo Okunor was unfairly treated when she was on two occasions invited for questioning after “some NPP tags surrounded and ransacked her car.
They pulled out a fully registered rifle prompting the police to invite Mrs. Naa Koyoo to the station for questioning.”
Professor Richard Kofi Asiedu continued to say “…The same Hawa Koomson on four occasions brought a gun and threatened Naa Koyoo for which reason had no choice but to also acquire a gun. So, we asked the Ghana Police Service where is the justice.”
