President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to making the Komenda Sugar Factory operational under his government, promising to transform the Central Region into Ghana’s leading sugar-producing hub.
Speaking at a “Thank You” rally in Cape Coast, Mahama revealed that his administration would take swift action to ensure the factory’s revival.
He disclosed that the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry had been tasked with providing an update on the factory’s status to guide the next steps.
Komenda Sugar Factory Revival
The Komenda Sugar Factory, initially launched under Mahama’s presidency in 2016, was expected to create over 7,000 jobs along the sugar value chain.
However, it has remained largely non-operational due to inadequate raw material supply and management challenges.

Despite attempts by the NPP government to revive it—including test runs and a leasing agreement with India-based West African Agro Limited—the factory has yet to resume full-scale operations.
Mahama assured that his administration would not only reopen the factory but also implement measures to support sugarcane farmers and ensure a steady supply of raw materials.
Concerns from Farmers and Factory Outgrowers
Local farmers have long expressed frustration over the factory’s inactivity and the lack of transparency in its management.
Mahama pledged to strengthen collaboration between the factory and outgrowers, ensuring fair engagement and improved irrigation systems to boost production.
Completion of Anomabo Fisheries College
Beyond agriculture, Mahama addressed the prolonged delay in completing the Anomabo Fisheries College.
He assured that his government would allocate funds by March to finalize the project before the end of the year, reinforcing his commitment to the region’s development.
A Vision for the Central Region
Mahama emphasized the Central Region’s economic potential, vowing to invest in agribusiness, tourism, and education.
He thanked residents for their support and assured them that his administration would fulfill all campaign promises.
“As a son of this region, I will ensure that the Central Region receives its fair share of development, from education to healthcare and economic empowerment,” he declared.
Mahama’s renewed promises signal his determination to address longstanding developmental challenges in the region and build a stronger economic foundation for its people.
