Ghana Water Limited (Central Region) has alerted residents of Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities about ongoing water supply challenges, attributing the issues to the adverse effects of illegal mining activities, commonly known as “Galamsey.”
According to the management, the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water to the affected areas, is struggling to meet demand due to inadequate raw water intake.
In an exclusive interview with ATLFM NEWS, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, the Communications Manager for Ghana Water Company in the Central and Western regions, revealed that illegal mining operations (Galamsey) are currently contaminating water sources across the country, warning that if these activities are not halted, they could lead to severe consequences in the future.
The Pra River, the primary source of water for the plant, has been heavily polluted by illegal mining operations, as a result, the water’s turbidity has spiked to alarming levels, recording an average of 14,000 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units), far above the plant’s designed capacity of 2,000 NTU.
This high turbidity according to a communique by Ghana Water Limited (Central Region) has reduced the plant’s production capacity to just 7,500 cubic meters per day, only a quarter of its installed capacity.
Ghana Water Limited has apologized for the significant inconvenience caused to customers due to the disruptions and is actively engaging with stakeholders to find a lasting solution, urging the public to join the fight against illegal mining, particularly along the Pra River.
The management encouraged residents to report any illegal mining activities to community leaders or local authorities, emphasizing that collective action is crucial for restoring water quality and ensuring a reliable supply of clean drinking water, especially during the festive season.
