The Central Regional Fire Commander has taken proactive steps to insulate markets in the region against markets and commercial fires sweeping across the country.
ACFO Merinder Mary Attigah-Mensah conducted tours to various market centres in the region including Kotokuraba, Abura, Mankessim and Winneba markets.
The tour forms part of broader effort by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to prevent and mitigate fire risks in these crucial commercial hubs.
In a statement, the regional command, GNFS indicated that the Commander earlier directed fire safety audits in all major markets in the region and appropriate recommendations sent to managers of the markets for appropriate action.
A key concern observed across these markets was inadequate accessibility, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to navigate in the event of a fire.
Commander Attigah-Mensah urged relevant authorities to take immediate steps to address this issue.
She expressed her appreciation for the Mfantsiman Municipal Assembly’s prompt response to decongest emergency routes in the Mankessim Market after it was brought to their attention by the Fire Safety team.
Additionally encouraged other assemblies to emulate their action.
During her interactions, the market traders expressed gratitude for the Commander’s visit and also commended the fire personnel for their consistent and visible presence, especially at night, which the traders said provided a sense of security and allowed them to sleep more soundly.
ACFO Attigah-Mensah stated that they soon visit other markets in the region.
She also emphasized the need for vigilance and urged fire personnel to avoid complacency in their duties.
