A cholera outbreak in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region has claimed three lives, with 11 confirmed cases out of over 200 suspected infections reported in Agona Swedru and its surrounding areas.
Municipal authorities, led by Simon Asare, the Agona West Municipal Coordinating Director, disclosed the development during a stakeholder meeting held at Swedru.
The outbreak, which began about a week ago, has sparked swift interventions to contain the spread of the disease, with Agona Nkum identified as the epicenter.
Swift Measures to Curb the Spread
In response, the Agona West Municipal Assembly has partnered with health officials to intensify efforts to tackle the situation.
Water tankers have been deployed to supply clean water to Agona Nkum and nearby communities following the breakdown of a critical pipeline from Agona Nyakrom.

Efforts are underway to repair the damaged pipes and restore a steady water supply to the affected areas.
The Assembly has also issued a three-month ultimatum for households in Agona Nyakrom and Agona Nkum to construct proper toilet facilities to improve sanitation and curb the spread of cholera.
Simon Asare cautioned that landlords who fail to comply will face strict penalties.
Community Engagement and Collaboration
A stakeholder meeting involving chiefs, Assembly members, representatives from political parties, market women, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), media practitioners, and driver unions highlighted the importance of collective action.
The Assembly has also announced plans for a decongestion exercise at the Central Business District of Swedru to ensure proper hygiene and reduce the risk of further outbreaks.
Health Authorities on High Alert
Officials at the Swedru Municipal Government Hospital have confirmed the 11 cholera cases and are providing treatment while working to identify and manage suspected cases.
Health teams are also conducting public education campaigns to promote handwashing, proper waste disposal, and other hygiene practices among residents.
Call for Cooperation
Acting Municipal Chief Executive Simon Asare emphasized the importance of community cooperation in addressing the outbreak.
“We are committed to working with health officials and all stakeholders to completely eradicate this disease from the municipality,” he assured.
Residents are urged to prioritize sanitation and adhere to health directives to prevent further spread.
As authorities intensify efforts to contain the outbreak, they are appealing for community support to bring the situation under control.
