Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. According to a 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) research, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer with 685,000 deaths globally.
In Ghana, however, 31.8% of cancer cases were due to breast cancer.
It is for this reason that the Female Journalists for Women and Rural Development in Africa (FJWORDA) in partnership with the B4 foundation organized a free health screening, particularly breast cancer examinations for women in Brafo Yaw in the Central Region.
In addition to receiving a free health screening, participants were sensitized on issues of domestic violence, personal hygiene, and healthy eating among other topics.
Speaking to ATL FM NEWS on the sidelines, the Executive Director of FJWORDA, Mrs. Shirley Asiedu Addo noted the devastating effects of breast cancer which she said continues to wreak great havoc on families and the community.
She said the outreach was organized in a bid to promote awareness about breast cancer and to get women to seek early treatment if anything is detected in their breasts.
She said “while the mass media is important in disseminating and creating awareness on pertinent issues affecting our communities, the effects of getting your hands to the plough and reaching to the communities physically can also not be underestimated. We as female journalists want to be part of the change that we want to see.”
To her, women should live in other to take care of their families and contribute their quota to society.
She, therefore, urged women to seek regular check-ups and prompt health care to avert disastrous consequences.
On her part, the executive director of the B4 Foundation, Ursula Adadzewa Fynn indicated that the Foundation was committed to supporting such events as they help to save lives.
She assured that similar outreaches would be organized annually in the future to raise awareness of major societal issues.
Ursula Fynn, therefore, urged well-meaning Ghanaians and corporate bodies to support them send their outreach programmes to other underprivileged areas in the country.
