The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination’s Creative Arts and Design subject includes a mention on Ghanaian artist Black Sherif.
Candidates were required to submit a brief statement regarding Black Sherif and two other composers, Ephraim Amu and Agya Koo Nimo, in response to question 5(c) of section B of the test.
The brief statement contained the composer’s hometown, his genre of choice, a sample of one of his compositions, and his social contributions.
Ghanaian singer, rapper, and fashion model Mohammed Ismail Sherif, commonly known as Black Sherif, rose to fame in 2021 after releasing his song “First Sermon” in May of that same year. In July of 2021, the “Second Sermon” was delivered in response to this.
His breakthrough came in March 2022 when he released the smash song “Kwaku the Traveller,” which peaked at number one on the Apple Music charts in Nigeria and Ghana. On October 5, 2022, he then published his debut album, The Villain I Never Was.

In Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Black Sherif was born and raised in Konongo-Zongo.
Sherif completed his elementary education at Konongo Zongo Islamic Basic School before graduating from junior high school at Pinamang Educational Complex.
After completing his secondary education at Kumasi Academy, he became interested in music and dance and joined the Students Representative Council’s (SRC) Literary Group (LG).
Through his outstanding creations, Black Sherif attained international acclaim and is highly regarded throughout the African continent.
Among his compositions are “Kilos Milos,” “Yaya,” “Shut Up,” “Soja,” and “The Villian I Never Was” album.
A student can: self-explore, self-express, develop mental focus, use hands skillfully to produce (physical dexterity), manage and minimize stress, and experience personal pleasure and enjoyment through the creative arts and design.
Monday, July 8, 2024 is the start date of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which will conclude on Monday, July 15, 2024.
