The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) as part of its awareness creation has reiterated the need for the public to patronize insurance policies.
Buying an insurance policy can be a blessing as it grants an individual the opportunity to enjoy some benefits, especially financial benefits when a crisis occurs.
Meanwhile, the Association is urging the public to be circumspect when subscribing to any insurance policy so they will not be defrauded.
Reports from the GIA indicate that some Ghanaians are reluctant to patronize insurance policies because of the negative perceptions they have about such policies.
In order to address these concerns, the Ghana Insurers Association established a Complaints Management and Advice Bureau (CMAB) in 2018.
“The Complaints Management and Advice Bureau is a bureau that was formed in June 2018 all because we realized that, when you go out there to talk about insurance, people had so much negativism or bad perception about insurance,” said the Head of Complaints and Claims at the GIA, Nda Ahale Polley.
He further indicated that “some years ago went to Takoradi Market Circle, immediately we got down from the car, they said the thieves have come and some of these things doesn’t go down well with us. So, we said it means people have so much negative perception about insurance. So, let’s try and form this bureau to make sure that we clear that perception that people have. How can we do that? By solving issues people have.”
Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with ATL FM NEWS, Nda Ahale Polley indicated that though people have negative perceptions about buying an insurance policy that should not deter them from purchasing a policy considering the benefits insurance policies come with.
Mr. Polley however advised that “for one to ascertain the authencity of an insurance policy, one must demand proof of the insurance company when presented with an insurance package.
This, according to her, will help the individual know if the insurance company is registered with the National Insurance Company (NIC), the regulator for Insurance Companies
“If you don’t find the name of the said Insurance Company on the website then please don’t do business with them.”
