The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has revealed the Free Tertiary Education policy for students with disability by Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia was developed by the NDC in its 2020 party manifesto document.
In an interview on Okay FM, the National Chairman expressed that Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has only made a slight revision of the policy to make it his own.
“The NPP know that this initiative is already the NDC’s 2020 manifesto document. This is not a new idea; he has only made some revisions and added a few words to it. People think this is a new policy but it is not, we want him to show his own ideas. What the NDC has vowed to implement is located in our manifesto and we will prove it”, he said.
His comments follow Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s pledge to offer free tertiary education to all qualifying students with disabilities in Ghana.
The flagbearer made this known during an interaction with the clergy in the Western North Region as part of his ongoing nationwide tour.
Dr. Bawumia explained that under his proposed government, scholarships would be specifically targeted to support persons with disabilities, covering both academic and residential fees from 2025 onwards.
“I am very clear on the way forward. We are going to provide additional support for persons with disabilities. While our scholarships are available to everyone, I plan to allocate specific funds from our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to ensure that every student with a disability who gains university admission receives free tuition and accommodation,” he affirmed.
According to him, even though scholarships are meant to be given to all manner of persons, his government will make scholarships for persons with disability a priority while emphasizing that this initiative will make higher education more accessible to students with disabilities.
