The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly pushed back against what he describes as tribal and religious propaganda being used against his candidature and his wife, Samira Bawumia.
Speaking at the 30th anniversary celebration of the NPP’s USA chapter, the former Vice President questioned why his northern roots have suddenly become a matter of contention now that he is seeking the party’s flagbearership.
“I am very, very concerned and troubled that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on religious and tribal bigotry and propaganda against me in a desperate attempt to win votes,” Dr. Bawumia lamented.
“They totally ignore all the data and findings about why we lost the 2024 elections and want to mislead the delegates and the party with psycho-propaganda.”
He warned that such divisive tactics threaten the unity of the party and could undermine its chances in future elections.
One issue Dr. Bawumia addressed was the long-standing Mamprusi-Kusasi conflict, which he said had been twisted into a campaign weapon.
“An aspirant has said that delegates should not vote for me because I am a Mamprusi man and that they will lose votes in the Kusasi areas and other regions. This is very unfortunate and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the situation on the ground,” he said.
His comments came in response to a recent video in which Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong accused him of being the reason the NPP lost heavily in Bawku during the 2024 general elections.
The former Agric Minister claimed that Dr. Bawumia’s Mamprusi background caused the party’s poor performance in the area.
Dr. Bawumia, however, dismissed such claims, insisting that the party’s electoral challenges go beyond tribal affiliations and must be tackled with unity, strategy, and focus.
