The Head of Human Resource Management and Development at the Cape Coast Metro Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Kofi Odum has indicated that for the metropolis to record 100% BECE score, there will be the need for a collaborative effort between headteachers and teachers of the various basic schools within the Cape Coast metropolis.
A recent report by the Cape Coast Metro Education Directorate has revealed that only 52.31 percent of pupils in public schools within the Cape Coast Metro Directorate passed the 2020 BECE, as against 82.56% of pupils in the private school sector within the metropolis.
Mr. Kofi Odum explained that student absenteeism, lack of basic school needs and lack of motivation for the students are the major possible factors that might have caused the low performance of student across the region.
“These are reports that have been received from our public school head teachers that our pupils have refused to go to school after the registration. And this I think is a challenge because, if you don’t go to school how will you be able to grab the concepts that are being taught by the teachers? For Parents to provide basic school needs for their wards is also a challenge. If the basic school needs are not provided, they are not motivated. Then if you look at the teacher factor, we mention the issue of the teachers skipping some topics.”
Outlining some possible measures that have been put in place to help improve on the Academic status of all the basic schools in Cape Coast, Mr Odum said “Apart from the training, they are intensifying supervision and monitoring of the schools.
“We have Sissos School Improvement Support Officers beefing up their supervisions to the schools every now and then. They are supposed to look at a number of things. For instance, how the teacher teaching in the classroom, we are also looking at attendance and other issues. And the circuit supervisor is supposed to at least visit a school once in a term.”
He however notes that their emphasis is on the spot supervision where the head of the school will have to make sure that teaching and learning goes on well in the classroom. Source: Benedicta Arthur/ATLFMNEWS
