Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has stressed the urgency of safeguarding the country’s democracy as it prepares for the 2024 elections.

Highlighting the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to prevent any potential unrest or electoral misconduct, he issued a cautionary note to Ghanaian leaders, noting the recent events in Kenya as a critical reminder.

Bagbin emphasized the importance of being vigilant and taking essential measures to prevent any potential unrest or electoral misconduct.

He pointed a reminder on the need for Ghanaian leaders, including Members of Parliament, to prioritize free, fair, and transparent elections.

“We must recognize that we share similarities with our counterparts in Kenya. It is imperative that we take pre-emptive steps to ensure such incidents do not occur here,” Bagbin remarked, asserting his commitment to ensuring impartiality in his actions.

He spoke to journalists on the sidelines of a key stakeholder engagement which included the chairperson of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, as well as traditional authorities and the Chief Justice to promote a peaceful electoral process,

The speaker also intends to meet with President Akufo-Addo to underscore the importance of conducting the upcoming election without violence.

Highlighting the necessity of remaining vigilant and proactive to prevent potential unrest or electoral malpractice, he also cautioned against complacency among parliamentarians.

“People sometimes take so many things for granted including my colleagues in Parliament, but we all can bear witness that what happened in Kenya is now in Tanzania, and it could be in Ghana and I am not saying it will be in Ghana.

The Kenyan government was recently forced to withdraw a financial bill that sought to raise more revenue after a massive protest by young people including an attack on parliament.
