Former WBC super-featherweight champion, Azumah Nelson, says the Boxing Promoters Association of Ghana has no locus to determine who should promote and organize boxing activities in the country.
The boxing legend also asserted that it was the right of any organization, personality, or entity to organize and promote boxing in the country and not the prerogative of the Promoters Association of Ghana.
He said the association should rather seek a better purse for boxers in the ongoing Professional Boxing League and stop throwing spanner in the works of the newly-introduced league.
“These young boys, if they don’t have anything doing, ended up becoming vagabonds, criminals, and armed robbers. They worry society so if there is an opportunity for them to earn something small for their livelihood, it must be supported,” Nelson told Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview in Accra last Wednesday.
He stated that the league, which started last weekend, would provide some basic needs for these professional boxers and serve as a platform for them to eke a living and sustain their families.
The Promoters Association of Ghana, a fortnight ago, kicked against the Professional Boxing League being staged at the Bukom Boxing Arena over what it termed as the GBA’s illegal behavior and autocracy.
But commenting on the recent development, Mr. Nelson stated that the real issue the association must contend with should be the pay package of the boxers participating in the league.
“The Promoters Association must seek for a good pay and bonuses for the boxers; they must ensure the boxers fighting are well paid and get their worth,” he stressed.
He noted that many boxers had become depressed for lack of fights and taken to vices that are hurting society, adding that the league, despite all its frailties, might come in handy for the boxers.
“Boxers go hungry and nothing is done about it, they suffer all manner of problems; they become vices to society so it is good for us to get them some source of income,” he explained.
