The teenage son of renowned British photojournalist Paul Lowe has been charged with his murder.
Paul Lowe, 61, an award-winning photographer who documented major conflicts such as the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war (1992-95), was found fatally stabbed on a hiking trail in California on Saturday.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Lowe’s 19-year-old son, Emir, has been formally charged with his father’s murder.
According to records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner, Mr. Lowe had suffered a fatal stab wound to the neck.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated: “The District Attorney’s Office filed one count of murder against suspect Emir Lowe for the murder of his father, Christian Paul Lowe. At this time, no further information is available.”
Emir Lowe is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Wednesday at the West Covina Courthouse.
Authorities reported that the incident took place at approximately 3:28 p.m. on Mount Baldy Road, near Stoddard Canyon Falls. Officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and discovered Mr. Lowe with severe trauma to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
The sheriff’s department also reported that a male suspect was seen driving away from the area and was later involved in a traffic accident a few miles from the crime scene. The individual, identified as Emir Lowe, was detained for further investigation.
Paul Lowe was also a visiting professor at King’s College London, where he was deeply respected for his work in war studies and photojournalism. The university released a statement on social media expressing their sorrow: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Paul Lowe. His contributions to photojournalism and his work on the Siege of Sarajevo left a lasting legacy. His energy, creativity, and dedication will be greatly missed.”
The University of the Arts London, where Lowe was a Professor of Photojournalism, and VII Academy, where he had been a prominent figure, also paid tribute to his impactful career.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
