The Nigerian police say they have arrested six men for allegedly stripping a widow naked and parading her on the streets of Aguleri town, in the south-eastern state of Anambra.
The woman is reportedly blamed by the suspects for her husband’s death because of “her infidelity”, which she denied.
Among those arrested is a traditional healer who treated the deceased when he was ill. He allegedly later told the deceased’s relatives that the woman was responsible for her husband’s death.
The arrests were made after a video of the incident went viral on social media, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over it.
Police described it as indecent assault. The force’s spokesman in Anambra state, Ikenga Torchukwu, told the BBC the suspects were being investigated and would be charged in court.
It’s common in some communities for people to be blamed for the death of their spouses. But the way the widow was allegedly treated in the latest incident is rare.
