The Kaneshie District Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of Madina’s MP Francis Sosu.
This came after Mr. Sosu missed court for the third time since criminal charges were brought against him.
On Monday, his lawyer, Victor Adawudu, informed the court that the MP was attending a parliamentary committee meeting and hence would be unable to appear in court.
The prosecutor, ASP Sylvestre Asare, told the court that it was clear that the court had the authority to issue a warrant for the MP’s arrest in such a criminal matter.
He claimed that the MP could not send someone to represent him in a criminal proceeding.
“He has a clear intention and has demonstrated that to this court. Therefore, it amounts to disrespect to this court,” ASP Asare said.
He was certain that no one is above the law.
Mr Adawudu insisted the Mp was attending parliamentary duties and was not staying away from the court.
Oheneba Kuffour, the judge in charge of the case, asked the Prosecutor whether his team had gotten a statement from the MP thus far. According to ASP Asare, no such statement had been received.
Mr Adawudu told the court that the MP had made no attempt to submit a statement since the situation had gone beyond the scope of the police.
ASP Asare then requested that the court issue a bench warrant for the MP’s arrest.
“You have so many powers, and nobody can undermine you, and you are the only person who can invoke section 167. This court should not be used to mark register.” ASP Asare said.
Mr Adawudu stated that he had initiated proceedings in a higher court to challenge the appropriateness of the allegations brought against the MP.
He requested that the matter be delayed and that the court be satisfied that the MP is contemplating not showing up before making any ruling.
The arrest warrant was issued by Magistrate Oheneba Kuffour, who noted that
“There is too much deception in the system.”
He then rescheduled the case until January 12, 2022.
During a street demonstration, the politician is accused of illegally obstructing public highways and causing property damage.
