A man posing as a self-styled military officer has been taken into custody by the Obuasi police during a robbery attempt.
Eric Opoku, 27, who claimed to be a military commander headquartered in Tamale but on special duty in Bawku, and his colleagues were accused of extorting money and gold dust from small-scale miners around the Obuasi Municipality.
Opoku, who claimed to be a Lance Corporal, was apprehended when he and his accomplices traveled to Kwabenakwa Nyamesomyede, an Obuasi suburb, for another mission. Opoku and his crew of four fired bullets to frighten off the miners.

However, the miners defied the threat, apprehended him, and turned him over to the police. During the arrest, he identified himself as L/Cpl Eric Opoku of the Ghana Armed Forces, Tamale.
Denounce
Brigadier Eric Aggrey-Quarshie, Director of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Armed Forces, issued and signed a declaration denying that he was a military officer and had never been assigned to undertake mining responsibilities.
As of press time yesterday, Opoku remained in police custody, and the police indicated that he will be arraigned soon.
