Farmers are being urged to approach agriculture using new ways of farming for better Agricultural Development which will in turn help develop the country.
The Vice Dean of the School of Agriculture of the University of Cape Coast, Prof Julius Kofi Hagan, indicates that those who practice Agriculture should pay much attention to the field in a more scientific way.
“We’ve been made to understand that Agriculture is more or less a hobby as done by most farmers. But if you want to develop as a country you need to approach it in a more scientific way” he said.
To him, agriculture which includes both crops and animals in this modern Ghana has to be viewed in a modern way other than the traditional way it’s being practiced.
With this, Prof. Hagan emphasized that farmers need to work to overcome the myths mitigating against Agricultural Development.
On animal rearing, he explained that for instance, farmers must not attribute the death of their livestock to any spiritual connotations.
“For all you know, there’s a serious disease outbreak that if measures are taken would help solve the problem.”
He explained further by saying that crop production must also be done with new seeds after harvesting.
To him, harvested crops are supposed to be for consumption.
“If you are planting or growing maize, normally as I usually say, what you eat is not what you are supposed to use to plant…when you harvest there’s no need to put some there to be used to plant in the next season… Anytime you are ready to start new planting, buy new seeds to plant” he continued.
