Ange Postecoglou’s Selection Puzzle: Why Maddison Should Start Against Liverpool
Mark Schwarzer thinks James Maddison should play against Liverpool. Maddison hasn’t been a regular starter under Ange Postecoglou this season, but he’s shown he can make a difference. Tottenham’s recent performance has been all over the place, putting more pressure on the Australian coach.
The team had a great win, smashing Manchester City 4-0. But then they lost to Bournemouth and let a 2-0 lead slip away against Chelsea. They pulled it together again, though, thrashing Southampton 5-0 with five goals in the first half.
Maddison Shines Against Southampton
James Maddison played a key role in the win over Southampton. He scored two goals, including the first and last ones. He even earned man-of-the-match honors. With those goals, he now has seven this season, which is impressive for a midfielder who doesn’t get a lot of time on the field.
Maddison also did well against Manchester City, scoring two goals, but it was surprising to see him benched when Spurs lost to Chelsea. He has been important, especially with so many players injured.
Schwarzer Supports Maddison
On the Optus Sport Football Podcast Weekend Preview, former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer praised Maddison’s role in the team. He said, Look at how he played against Southampton; he’s been Tottenham’s best player this season. Having him in form now could change everything. He also mentioned that the team has really missed Maddison.
Even with his great play, Postecoglou has kept him out of some big matches, like those against Chelsea and Aston Villa. With Spurs’ injury issues, Schwarzer believes it’s a no-brainer to start Maddison against Liverpool.
Spurs Face Liverpool
Tottenham is in 10th place with 23 points. A win against Liverpool would help them get closer to a European spot. Last season’s match was quite a drama, with Spurs scoring in the 96th minute after Liverpool had a goal ruled out and ended the game with nine men.
As Liverpool leads the league, Maddison’s skills and recent good form could be crucial for Spurs to pull off a much-needed win.
