Amorim Highlights United’s Achilles’ Heel as Mainoo Is Played as Centre-Forward
Manchester United is facing serious struggles in front of goal, and in a bid to change their fortunes, manager Ruben Amorim made a bold move in their 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday morning (AEDT). For the first time in his senior career, Kobbie Mainoo was deployed as a centre-forward. This decision came as a surprise, especially since the usual forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee started the match on the bench.
Both Hojlund and Zirkzee have been underperforming this season, with neither finding consistent form. Amorim appeared to feel that Manchester United needed to explore a new approach, turning to Mainoo, who is more commonly known as a midfielder. While Mainoo did well in terms of ball control and linking up play, the move raised questions in the dressing room. Former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchison, speaking on The Weekend Wrap on Optus Sport, suggested that the decision to play Mainoo upfront could have left both Hojlund and Zirkzee questioning their roles at the club.

Unconventional Tactical Shift Raises Eyebrows
Hutchison pointed out that starting a midfielder as a centre-forward is a bold choice, especially with two established centre-forwards on the bench. “What does that do to Rasmus Hojlund and Zirkzee?” Hutchison questioned. “Two centre-forwards sitting on the bench that can’t get in because a midfielder is playing in my position… strange.” Although Mainoo showed promise with his ability to hold onto the ball, Hutchison acknowledged that the overall tactical approach didn’t quite come together for Manchester United.
The game against Crystal Palace saw the Red Devils struggle to create meaningful chances. Despite Mainoo’s link-up play with Garnacho and Amad, the team found themselves up against a Palace defense that was well-organized, with three centre-backs putting in a solid performance. After just 10 minutes, United ran out of ideas and were unable to break down Palace’s resolute defense.
A Season of Missed Opportunities
Manchester United‘s attacking woes have been a theme throughout the season. Despite playing one less match than Premier League leaders Liverpool, United has managed only half the number of goals that their rivals have scored. Post-match, Amorim made it clear that the decision to start Mainoo as a forward wasn’t a personal one against Hojlund or Zirkzee. Instead, it was a strategic choice based on the need to create more dynamic attacking situations.
“It’s not against Rasmus or Josh,” Amorim said. “Sometimes the team creates situations by using the right characteristics. It’s not because you play with two scorers that you’re going to score more goals. It’s a collective problem. We have to improve in all aspects of the game.”
Troubling Times Ahead for Manchester United
Currently sitting in 13th place in the Premier League, Manchester United finds themselves closer to the relegation zone than the coveted top four spots. Their upcoming fixtures, including away games against Tottenham and Everton, will be crucial as they try to turn their season around.
Hutchison expressed doubts about the team’s ability to pick up points in the coming matches. “They’re too inconsistent,” he said. “Normally you can have an idea where they might have a chance. I’m just not sure where they’re going to get the wins from.”
United’s loss to Crystal Palace only added to the growing list of disappointing results, and Hutchison noted that the team’s lack of consistency leaves them in a fragile position. “From a United point of view, I can’t rely on them, they’re too inconsistent,” he added.
As the Red Devils continue to struggle with form and goals, Amorim’s side will need to find a solution soon or risk falling further behind in the Premier League race.
