Residents of Amamoma in Cape Coast have been sensitized on the dangers of illicit drug use through a final-year project by a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student.
The project, titled “Exploring People’s Mindset on Illicit Use of Drugs Through Theatre for Development in Amamoma, Cape Coast”, was staged on Wednesday, August 28, 2025.
It formed part of a critical Health Intervention Point (HIP) and sought to raise awareness on the misuse of drugs and its impact on community health.
Using participatory theatre, the initiative engaged residents in discussions, performances, and reflections to tackle drug abuse at the grassroots level.
Speaking in an interview with ATLFM News, a Community Mental Health Nurse at the Elmina Polyclinic, Rita Donkor, explained that poor parental care is a major contributor to drug abuse.

“Most drug addictions occur because of lack of proper guidance and support from parents,” she said.
She further cautioned against the excessive intake of energy drinks, highlighting their long-term health risks.
“We need to reduce our intake of energy drinks daily, because they can have lasting negative effects on our health,” Miss Donkor warned.
Residents welcomed the initiative, describing it as both educative and eye-opening. “This program has opened our eyes to the dangers of drug abuse and the role we all must play in protecting our youth,” one participant said.
