A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Stephen Moore has emphasised the importance of algorithms in simplifying everyday life.
Dr. Moore explained that algorithms, which are step-by-step procedures help to complete tasks, similar to how mathematics works.
In an exclusive interview with ATL FM NEWS, he highlighted that mathematics provides a deeper understanding of various situations, enhancing daily life like science.
“When we say algorithm, they are rolled out procedures for implementation hence if nobody is present and the steps are given to you it can be followed easily,” he said.
Dr Moore also illustrated this by pointing out that the functionality of WhatsApp for sending and receiving messages relies on algorithms.
“One key thing that is noted as an algorithm is the use of WhatsApp on phones for communication through calls, sending and receiving of message and images”, he stated.
He also added that algorithms can be customised to meet specific needs, implying they should not be applied in the same way as in other countries.
Additionally, Mr. Moore expressed that algorithms can be utilised to advance development in a country, particularly in managing electricity and water usage.
“Algorithms can be adjusted to suit our development patterns;…We can reflect on the developmental needs of Ghana and gain solutions through algorithms, particularly in managing electricity and water usage”, he advised.
Emphasizing algorithm use at marketplaces, Dr. Moore explained that marketwomen use algorithms to decide which foodstuffs to sell based on the meals buyers are likely to cook.
According to him, their ability to predict combinations of food items that will sell well for specific meals is driven by their use of algorithms.
“When you go to the market to buy foodstuffs for a particular meal, you’ll realize that the seller can recommend other foodstuffs she sells to complete the foodstuff sold by the seller. This follows the algorithm pattern and it uses science to make the thinking pattern possible”, he said.
