According to an official of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), there was a shortage of almost every food product in Ghana in 2020, contradicting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s statement that Ghana had no food shortage last year.
President Akufo-Addo told members of the Eighth Parliament in his address on the state of the nation last Tuesday that there was resilience in the provision of food as a result of the prudent steps introduced in the agriculture sector during his first term.
On Tuesday, March 9, the president told Parliament, “I am happy to inform the House that during this time of the pandemic, we have encountered no food shortages in this country.”
However, Charles Nyaaba, the Head of Programmes and Advocacy at PFAG, said they were shocked when the president made the remark on the floor of Parliament during the pre-budget discussions on TV3 on Friday, March 12.
“We assume the president was given false information; otherwise, he would not have came to say that,” he told host Alfred Ocansey.
Contrary to what the president claims, there is ample evidence among farmers that Ghana’s food supply suffered last year.
Mr Nyaaba said that even poultry farmers could testify to the scarcity of maize feeds, adding that “right now, we can’t even boast of 1,000 tonnes of Sorghum.”
“As we speak, the majority of cereals in this country are in short supply,” he said.
