President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has committed to taking decisive steps to mitigate the severe effects of the ongoing drought in the northern region of Ghana, which has led to significant losses for local farmers.
Farmers in these regions have struggled as their crops and overall farm production have been devastated by the harsh dry conditions with reports from the affected areas highlighting the severe impact on agricultural activities.
During his visit to commission the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital on August 15, President Akufo-Addo addressed the situation, promising immediate relief measures for the struggling farmers.
“As I am in the region, it is important that I comment on a matter of considerable importance to the peoples of the northern regions of our country,” the President said.
He acknowledged the severe impact of the drought on farm output and assured the public that the government would soon announce specific measures to tackle the crisis.
“I am aware of the impact that the dry season has had on farm output. I want to assure you that the Government, in the next few days, will announce the measures to address the situation,” he stated.
The government had previously launched the ‘One Village, One Dam’ initiative to build dams in northern Ghana to aid farming during the dry season, however, despite some progress, the current drought has hampered effective water storage, worsening the damage to agricultural production.
President Akufo-Addo’s commitment brings hope to affected farmers as they await the government’s upcoming plans to address the drought and support agricultural recovery in the northern regions.
