President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hailed the nation’s resilience in navigating through challenging economic circumstances.
During the commemoration of Ghana’s 67th year of independence in Koforidua, themed “Our Democracy, Our Pride”, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the crucial role of safeguarding and passing down treasured national principles to future generations.
While paying a glowing tribute to the freedom fighters of Ghana’s independence, President Akufo Addo highlighted the importance of a shared sense of pride in Ghana’s identity and values, underlining these as key to the country’s resilience and democratic journey.
The president also acknowledged the importance of free speech and the media in a democratic dispensation.
He expressed the current state of the media in the country as satisfying but cautioned against its unrestricted exercise.
He stressed the importance of learning from past experiences, particularly of political discourse, urging greater tolerance for diverse perspectives, especially in the lead-up to the December elections.
In dealing with the country’s economic difficulties, the President recognized the tough times people have faced but remained positive about the future. He encouraged everyone to stay optimistic, assuring them that Ghana has passed the worst of its economic challenges.
He, however, emphasized “We still have a lot more to learn especially when it comes to the tolerance of opposing views. But we also know that we dare not relapse, as there are many examples of countries that have disintegrated into chaos as a result of disputed elections”.
Meanwhile, the guest speaker, Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara commended President Akufo Addo for his commitment, dedicated leadership and achievements despite the adverse economic challenges.
