The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has apologized to the people of Cape Coast for claiming he never promised a harbour in the Central Regional capital.
Some Cape Coast locals had been waiting for the government to build a new harbour since the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) pledged to build one in the region during the run-up to the 2020 general elections.
However, their expectations were almost crushed when President Akufo-Addo said in a recent interview that his party never made such a promise.
“The commitment was never to build a harbour; it was to build a landing site,” Akufo-Addo said on Cape Coast-based Eagle FM on Monday.
The President’s remark during his visit to the Central Region earlier this week sparked outrage, with recordings showing the Vice President repeating the NPP manifesto pledge resurfacing on social media.
However, in an interview with Peace FM on Thursday morning, President Akufo-Addo said that his previous comments regarding the Cape Coast port were a mistake.
He said that his administration is already working on constructing a harbour in Elmina, as well as one in Cape Coast.
“Let me confess, I made a mistake on the Cape Coast matter. Even with the mistake, we have to have a rethink. We cannot have a harbour at Takoradi, Elmina, and have another one at Cape Coast. But I have to apologize to the people of Cape Coast. Presidents are humans, and they can make mistakes,” he said
