President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will break ground for the building of hospitals under the government’s Agenda 111 program on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, as part of efforts to alleviate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic’s health catastrophe.
The project is part of the Akufo-Addo administration’s grand vision for Ghana’s healthcare sector, the fulfillment of which would guarantee that 101 exceptional districts will be supplied with hospitals, in addition to 10 chosen regional and specialty hospitals.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of Information, said during the Minister’s press conference on Sunday, August 15, 20201, that the President would personally witness the start of work at Trade in the Ashanti Region, with other contractors in other districts anticipated to follow suit.
He said that Agenda 111 is expected to take 12 months to complete from the start of each unit, with government financing of $100 million provided via the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF).
According to the Minister, the building of the 111 hospitals would lead to Ghana becoming a Center of Medical Excellence and a West African sub-regional destination for medical tourism.
“The project is expected to deepen healthcare delivery at all district levels and ensure that the Ghanaian can access high-quality healthcare at all district levels. It will also provide thousands of jobs for the healthcare staff to be recruited and posted to all these 111 facilities as well as their ancillary workers in these communities. The housing and local services associated with these projects are also expected to add a new layer to local economic activities in service of the local communities.”
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah urged everyone, particularly local beneficiary communities, traditional leaders, youth, and other players in the local health sector, to rally behind the agenda and provide their full support as the government implements the initiative in its entirety.
