The Nigerian singer Fireboy DML has declared that Afrobeats are only “vibes” and that there is no real emotional expression or lyrical depth to the genre.
The well-known singer-songwriter, real name Adedamola Adefolahan, stressed in a recent BET interview that “pure soul and lyricism,” which he feels were lacking in the previous Afrobeats scene, are essential components that the genre has to incorporate.
In order to create music that truly connects with listeners, the “Vibration” crooner encouraged other musicians to go deeper into their feelings and experiences.
He said, “The Afrobeats scene before I came in was built on vibes. But I realised that there was something lacking, and that was pure soul and lyricism in our music.”
Additionally, Fireboy DML disclosed that he has created a brand-new Afrobeats subgenre distinguished by deep lyrics and emotional melodies.
“That was what I brought into the game. That’s why I call it Afro-Life — it’s Afrobeats that has some depth to it.”

Concerning Afrobeats
The modern music genre known as “afrobeats” got its start in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa in the early 2000s. It is a synthesis of dancehall, hip hop, hip hop, highlife music, and indigenous African rhythms. Tony Allen, King Sunny Adé, and Fela Kuti were among the artists who significantly influenced the genre’s early development.
