Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is rapidly losing public goodwill due to what he describes as the government’s failure to deliver on key promises.
Speaking to students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Mr. Afenyo-Markin pointed to rising unemployment, the government’s inability to tackle illegal mining, and the lack of a clear roadmap for the much-touted 24-hour economy as major concerns eroding public confidence.
“The situation is getting out of hand, and our friends in government must not take the great image they currently enjoy for granted,” he said.
He accused the NDC administration of focusing more on political rhetoric than on practical solutions, stressing “Ghanaians are no longer interested in slogans. They are looking for real interventions that will change their lives.”
The Minority Leader also expressed disappointment at the government’s handling of environmental issues, particularly illegal mining, noting “Our water bodies in the Central Region are polluted. The Gold Bond that was set up was a beautiful idea, but I warned in Parliament that it would promote galamsey, and that is exactly what has happened.”
Mr. Afenyo-Markin further warned that by early next year, citizens will demand tangible results from the government, emphasizing that “At that point, it’s no more about going to say this or that. It’s not about the song. It’s about the deliverables. You can’t continue to blame the Akufo-Addo government anymore,” he noted.
He also raised concerns about the shrinking democratic space, cautioning that critics risk being silenced. “Today, if you are a political opponent and you are not careful, you get arrested for criticizing the government under accusations of causing fear and panic,” he said.
The Minority Leader urged the NDC to act swiftly and decisively, warning that failure to deliver on promises will result in disillusionment. “By January next year, they need to begin to answer questions about jobs, galamsey, and the 24-hour economy. Ghanaians will not wait forever,” he concluded.
