Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of positioning flagship policies introduced under previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administrations as though they were conceived and implemented by the NDC itself.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin argued that the issue is not policy continuation—which he described as normal in governance—but what he called an attempt to assume ownership of initiatives that were designed and launched under NPP governments.
“Claiming Authorship”
Speaking during an appearance on United Television (UTV) on Monday—an interview closely monitored by ATL FM — the Minority Leader cited the Free Senior High School program and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as key examples.
According to him, both interventions were initiated and institutionalized under NPP leadership but are now being communicated in a way that suggests they originated with the current NDC administration.

“This is about authorship and historical accuracy,” he suggested, adding that governance should not erase the origins of major national programs.
Narrative Control in Politics
Mr. Afenyo-Markin admitted that the NPP, while in government, did not consistently defend and project its policy record.
He said that failure has created room for political opponents to redefine the narrative.
“In politics, if you do not actively protect your legacy, it can be rewritten,” he said.
Analysts note that disputes over policy ownership are common when governments change, especially where long-term social interventions continue across administrations.
A Strategic Reset
The Minority Leader said the NPP must now prioritize documentation, communication, and public engagement to ensure its contributions to national development are not obscured.
He stressed that the debate is not about halting ongoing programs but about acknowledging the governments under which they were conceived and executed.
The NDC government has not yet responded to the Minority’s claims.
