Ghanaian artist Adina Thembi has opened out about her painful early life, exposing the prejudice and cruelty she encountered because of her pale skin tone.
Adina described how she was frequently misinterpreted and called “disrespectful” or “bad” only because of the color of her skin in an interview with Property FM, a radio station based in Cape Coast.
“Growing up, because I am a fair skin coloured person, when a lot of people see me at first glance, they judge me to be disrespectful just because of my skin colour,” she shared.
She continued, “I’ve had instances where in the area that we reside, people used to tell my mother to keep a close eye on me just because I was looking very fair in complexion.”

“There are times when my mother tells me about the complaints she’s received about me, I used to feel so hurt because to me, I don’t see what I’ve done wrong,” the woman said, expressing the anguish and bewilderment she had as a youngster.
The ‘Obi Tan Wo’ hitmaker added “But just because of the way God has created me, the moment you set your eyes on me, you conclude that I’ll be a very bad girl or disrespectful, and that’s some of the experiences I’ve been through.”
