Veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi confidently declared that no woman can make him go hungry, thanks to his impressive cooking skills.
During an appearance on GTV’s Breakfast Show, he shared that his signature dish is okro stew, which he uniquely prepares with coconut oil instead of the usual palm oil. In his home, this stew is often paired with rice, highlighting his culinary versatility.

Amugi humorously offered to cook for the show’s host, Kafui Dey, assuring him that he would never doubt his cooking or think a woman had prepared the meal.
His passion for cooking began in childhood, as his mother would assign him cooking duties at age nine, while he also learned by observing her. Beyond okro stew, he showcased his ability to pound and prepare fufu independently, demonstrating his expertise in traditional Ghanaian cuisine.
He recalled his father’s advice: “What the girls can do, you should be able to do too,” a lesson that has greatly shaped his outlook.
Amugi was on the show to promote the upcoming stage play Ghana Must Go, written by renowned playwright Latif Abubakar. The play will premiere on May 24-25, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, telling the story of friends returning to Ghana from the diaspora, seeking to reconnect with their roots and face an uncertain future.
