A four-day Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Girls’ Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) camp meeting has begun at Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast under the auspices of the Cape Coast Metro Education Directorate.
The KOICA is a sponsored camp meeting which begun on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, and will end on Thursday, December 22, 2022.
The camp meeting forms part of activities held under the KOICA STEM project.
The Government of the Republic of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Ghana’s Ministry of Education signed an MoU to commence this project.
The project seeks to promote girls’ competency and participation in STEM courses in some schools in Ghana dubbed, “Promotion of Girls Competency in Mathematics and Science with Gender-Responsive Pedagogy.”
The programme is currently being implemented in four hundred public schools in two Regions of Ghana, the Eastern and the Central Regions with 200 each from each region.
Five Districts in the Central Region namely, Cape Coast, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem, Gomoa East, and Agona East are beneficiaries of the project.
In the Cape Coast Metro Education Directorate, 39 schools were selected for the KOICA STEM project and they include 14 high-performance schools, 15 average-performance schools, and 10 low-performance schools.
The Director of the Cape Coast Metro Education Directorate, Mrs Phyllis Asante-Krobea speaking at the opening ceremony of the KOICA Girls’ Camp Meeting said the directorate had organized math and science quizzes competition for beneficiary schools at the school level, circuit level, and metro level to improve learning outcomes.
According to her, teachers have also benefitted through capacity building with directors and educational officers also benefitting.
To the children, she advised them saying “This is the time to be wise and make the most out of every opportunity given you”.
Meanwhile, the headmistress of Wesley Girls High School, Mrs. Kay Oppong-Ankomah who welcomed the students to the premises of Wesley Girls High School urged them to pay attention to what they are taught during the camp meeting since it is one way for them to become successful students.
KOICA was founded as a Korea government agency on April 1, 1991, to maximize the effectiveness of the Republic of Korea’s grant aid programmes for developing countries.
They focus on Education, Health, Technology, Agriculture, and Crosscutting issues.
The KOICA project is a 4 years development project, which commenced in 2020 and will end in 202. It is an Eight (8) Million Dollar project.
